Last week Bree sat down with Mr. Pearless Speller, an Eastern NC native, to discuss his journey of breaking into the art world as a Black man. He spoke about how his childhood on the farm in Eastern North Carolina led to him being a nationally recognized artist.

Mr. Speller discussed how he grew up on the farm in Eastern NC. He grew up in a time where Black artists weren't recognized in the mainstream art world. By seeing people who looked like him succeed in the art world, he was able to find the inspiration to break into the field and chase his dreams. Mr. Speller achieved many awards and his art has been recognized on a national scale. His story is a great example of why representation is important for young children of color.
“ She locked us in a room and taught us about Black history" - Pearless Speller
